Book Review: Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Summary.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland — the infamous Queen of Hearts — she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king’s marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.

Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Review.

I got this book in the November Owlcrate box and oh my, I am so glad I did, I loved it! I dived right into it with no expectations, no hopes or anything because I had not heard a single thing about it before- but it did not disappoint. I read this book every moment I got the chance- through the night, on the train and I even read it while walking home but I walked soooo slow that it took me and extra half an hour haha! Totally worth it though.

I am a sucker for retellings – especially fairy-tale ones, and Marissa Meyers retellings are always amazing. However, this book isn’t anything like The Lunar Chronicles, instead its almost a prequel to the Alice in Wonderland series, where certain events lead up to known facts about the characters in wonderland… like how the hatter is mad, the roses that always need to be painted red, and the queen of hearts most popular saying, “off with your head”.

From the beginning I knew how the story would end, I have read and watched Alice In Wonderland enough times to know that the red queen isn’t someone you may want to be associated with but at the same time I felt like I had no clue about what was going to happen.

Catherine is the main character in the book, she is a lover of sweets and cooking and is really quite an ordinary and nice young girl and so  from the beginning I was curious to see how the events would change her into such an evil, heartless person. However, the further in the book I read, the more I thought that Cath wasn’t going to be who I expected her to be.

Jest is the kings royal Joker, and he is quite a charmer. I really believed from the beginning that I knew how his story would evolve and who he would end up being…. boy was I wrong. The romance between Cath and Jest is possibly the only thing that let this book down, but it wasn’t even that bad- I just felt that some of it was a little rushed, and there wasn’t enough leading up to it. That’s just my personal thoughts though, I still loved the book!

Marissa Meyer did a great job at portraying the reality of how Cath would have felt towards the situations she encountered, she made the personality flip of the characters seem really real and they weren’t over dramatic, they were just right!

It was quite awesome meeting the hatter before he was mad, and seeing the events that made him so bonkers. Same with the Cheshire and the white rabbit- although they are very similar to how we know them.

It was really awesome seeing the relationships between the queen of hearts and the hatter, and  Cheshire and every other character but before she was the queen we all know her to be. I would recommend this book to every Wonderland fan, and even those who may not be.

I cant wait to see what else Meyer has in store for us all…. until next time! 🙂

Burn, Rewrite, Reread Tag

Its time for another tagggggg!!! Dun Dun DUNNNNNN!

I was not tagged by anyone to do this *gasp* but I saw it on Read Forevermore  blog and it seemed like an interesting tag and I really wanted to do it, so here I am now… doing the tag…. like I said- lets just start!!!

THE RULES:

  1. Randomly choose 3 books. I got my sister to pick out the books for me!
  2. For each trio, decide which book to burn, which one to rewrite, and which to reread.
  3. Repeat until you have completed as many rounds as you would like!

Round One:

BURN: The Duff, I did not even have to think twice about that one. I didn’t really enjoy this book, I do not know if it was just me, maybe I wasn’t feeling it when I read it… But I don’t mind putting it in the burn pile!

REWRITE: I’m going to have to say Snow Like Ashes even though I liked this book there were parts that I wish maybe could have been written differently and the plot twist wasn’t the hugest shock. I still loved it though and you should still go read it!

REREAD: Cress!!! My favorite out of the Lunar Chronicles (so far) !! I loved this book so much and would reread it, plus the rest of the series over and over and probably over again because why not!

Round Two:

BURN: Ruby Red… I have to do it! I did very, very much enjoy this book but in saying that, I seriously enjoyed all 3 of these books!

REWRITE: These Broken Stars, I just finished this book the other day and it was pretty cool! However, I would have liked maybe the ending to be more explained, but I have 0 idea what the next book is about so maybe they say something there….

REREAD: The Rise of Nine!!!!!!! I loved this book so much and I so badly want to read the rest of the series but for some reason I still have not!!!! SO, I would reread this book because then maybe I would be more motivated to keep reading the rest of the series!

Round Three:

BURN: Insurgent… I read it so long ago but I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as I could have! Plus the American Covers are so so soooo much nicer, so I could burn it and then buy the cooler cover!

REWRITE: Oh my gosh, I don’t know!!!!!!! I loved them both! AHhh I’m going to say Siege and Storm and Leigh can just rewrite like one sentence because I seriously loved this book so much!

REREAD: Harry Potter obviously, there is no way the other books in this round had any chance! I could reread this over and over and its always going to be amazing!!

I tag everyone and anyone who would like to do it!!!!! xx

HAVE FUNNNNN and stay bookish HAHAH

Make your own Mini Books

Hello Everyone! The other day I made these little books with my sister and posted a picture onto my Instagram and my friend Rylee suggested that I make a blog post explaining how to do it.. so here it is! miniii books

1. Choosing the book cover –

This is the most important step! Without a cover, you have no book! You can chose any cover you want, you just have to make sure that there is a front and a back on google images… unless you are only worrying about the front cover!! Once you have thought of your cover idea you should be have something similar to this!! Some will be easier to find then others!

2. Putting it onto a word document –

When you have your front and back cover, copy (or save them) and paste them onto a word document similar to below! Depending on how big or how small you want the mini books, size it how you like, making sure that the back cover is on the left so when you print it, it will open correctly!! Leave a small space (once again depends on the size) in the middle for your spine cover!

real;kdejiokijf;ocp.png

3. Spine cover –

I found it almost impossible to find the spine covers of books so instead I just used shapes off word and created a plain colour for the spine! Feel free to create a spine but I was to lazy at the time!

There is some books, like harry potter, That come with the back, front, AND the spine cover all in one so all you have to do is put it onto a word documents! Like this one below!harry-potter-deathly-hallows-71 (2).jpg

4. Printing –

If you just want to make one little book, go ahead and print, but if you want to make more!! ‘Cause they are so cute, repeat steps 1-4 until you are happy with the amount!

5. Putting the book together-

Cut out your printed books off the paper and fold them so they look like little binders! (That’s what my sister thought they looked like…) and with lined paper, coloured paper or white paper – whatever you would like, open the book flat and trace a rectangle around the paper to cut out and glue inside!! Do this as many times as you want, depending how full ou want the book to look!!

AND YOUR DONEEEE!!!!!

I really hope that made sense and that you have fun making some of your own!! You could also punch holes and make them as little key rings!!

I would love to see what books you recreate, so tag me in your pictures!

The Mortal Cup – Shadow Hunters #1

rs_1024x691-151120131342-1024.shadow-hunters-freeform.ch.1112015SPOLIERS AHEAD!! If you have not watched the episode yet, come back when you have! ‘Cause I don’t want to spoil anything for you!!

Warning! What you are about to read is very random and completely unorganized and crazy! Its just my thoughts from after watching the episode! ( Which explains why its all over the place!) Read on at your own will! ahahahh!! And these are just my personal opinions!

I do not even know where to start…. IT WAS AMAZING! The plot, the people, EVERYTHING! Oh can we please just take a moment to appreciate everyone’s faces… and Izzy’s hair!!!

So it starts of with the trio (Izzy, Jace and Alec) following a d295837-11emon and Oh my! I thought this was great and when they all joined together and flipped down… I got Goosebumps and squealed!!!!! ARRRR!!!!! They all look so good together! Izzy and Alec actually look so much like siblings, its unreal!!!

When Simon gave Clary a piggyback – I thought that was the cutest thing ever!!!!!!!!

But oh my gosh! The institute looks like woah! Its so different, but I think I love it! I love the technology.. that’s cool. There is so many people though! I wonder how that will play out! Talking about locations… Clary’s house was exactly how I imagined it to be!!!!!!

I really, really like how the runes look! They look more natural – well as natural as something like that can look! But the way the put them on hahah its like swipe, BAM! hahah

MAGNUS!!!!! HE LOOKS AWESOME AND HIS EYES!!!!!!! And his magic looks amazing! Its like a magic blue cloud!

I was very unsure about Kat, who plays Clary, before today but now after watching it, I love her! She played Clary perfectly I think! And she is SO PRETTY!!!!! Its so unfair! hahah!!! She was so …. I don’t know the word but the way she just followed Jace and pushed the girl out of the way!!!

Oooh

Dorothea!!!! OMG I DIDNT EVEN RECOGNIZE HER AT FIRST!! Compared to the how I imagined her she is so young! I like it though, im defiantly not complaining! OOo that reminds me, the demons!!!! OMG!!! At first I was like oh hay its a weeping angel from Doctor Who (well sorta) and then its face was like BAM a star fish and I was like woahhh whattt hahaha!! It was a very dramatic moment for me! It was also very creepy!

9b0dbeac-91a8-4464-9079-861f2891cf50Now lets talk about Izzy!! She was a completely different person in the TV shows compared to the movie!! Her outfits, her personality!! After Clary woke up she is like owww, im izzy and she sounded so sweet!!! But her pandemonium outfit!!! WOAH that was something and her training outfit too!!!! Once again, im not complaining! I love it!

I actually loved everything about it and after finishing it I was so hyper and happy!! I couldn’t stop laughing at everything because it put me in such a good mood!!!

That’s all for now! I loved it so much!! Thankyou for reading up till here and putting up with my random, crazy thoughts!

What did you think of the episode??

The Lonely Hearts Club – Elizabeth Eulberg

6609714Hey Guys! I finished reading ‘The Lonely Hearts Club’ just last week and I loved it way more then I expected. I got this book for free from my school library late 2015 and was keeping it for an “emergency book” – for when I had nothing else to read ’cause I don’t normally read this sort of genre! But I think contempary/romance may just be growing on me!

Penny Lane… So if your a beetles fan you will automatically know that this is one of their songs, if not.. well its the title of one of their songs and its also the name of the main character in ‘The Lonely hearts Club’ !!! This book is based around a lot of Beatles references and things because the main characters parents are die hard fans! Hence her name!

Penny Lane is the main character in the novel and is the leader of the club! I was a bit hesitant about her during the novel because I felt like she was quite mean sometimes – just my personal opinion! but by the last part of the book I really thought she was awesome!

Ryan…. heheh Ryan was probably the best character in this entire novel and is now on my list of my Bookish Boyfriends!! He was the cutest, sweetest guy ever and sounded very swoon worthy!

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and recommend it to anyone! Even if you don’t always enjoy romance you most likely this one because over half the book is based around the no-dating club! Its quite a cool and different book!

2015 has been a great year of reading for me! All together I read 54 books and I loved a lot of them! I have to say though that there were some GORGEOUS covers this year! I will be showing you my favourite covers of 2015 and Im going to write 1 quote from each! Maybe you might fall in love with one and read it in 2016…. you never know 🙂 These are just in the order of when I read them, not in favourites because I love them all!!!

  1. WaterFire Saga , Deep Blue (Jennifer Donnelly)  – This cover is so pretty and to top it off the chapter pages are coloured and have ‘lil waves! I love it! Quote: “Whatever you do or dream you can do—begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.”DEEP_BLUE_jacket_front.jpg
  2. Breathe (Sarah Crossman) – I actually bought this book because of how beautiful the cover was! But the story was just as great! Quote: “Just because no one’s managed something in the past, doesn’t mean the future’s lost.”   13541378
  3. The Power of Six (Pittacus Lore) – So this cover isn’t necessary “pretty” but I love it! Its bumpy and some parts are shiny and its bright and I LOVE BATS!! But I don’t think many of you have the cover I have…. Quote: “The only limits for tomorrow are the doubts we have today.”Tpo6
  4. The Assassins Blade (Sarah J. Maas) – WOW! This cover is gorgeous! Maybe one of my super favourites ever! Quote:If you can learn to endure pain, you can survive anything. Some people learn to embrace it- to love it. Some endure it through drowning it in sorrow, or by making themselves forget. Others turn it into anger.”9781408852590
  5. Enrule (Holly Sparks) – This cover has so many little details on it every time I go pick it up … which I do a lot, you see a new thing! Quote: “I may not be in wonderland, but im sure in Zombieland”14947763-368-k456715
  6. All  Fall Down (Ally Carter) – This book is so bright and happy and I love how the version I have is hard cover! Quote: “I have to smile. He’s such a dork. But I’m starting to realize the one good thing that’s happened: he’s my dork.”24830492.jpg
  7. Snow like Ashes (Sara Raasch) – THIS COVER IS METALIC LOOKING and that is amazing! Its the best cover of 2015 I think! Quote:Even the strongest blizzards start with a single snowflake.” 17399160

I really, really loved all these covers so much and I can not wait to see what covers I find in 2016! Happy New Year everyone xx

Enrule – Holly Sparks

image.jpegEnrule by Holly Sparks was incredible. It had my heart racing, my eyes watering and I laughed too! Enrule is the story of Ella’s life after the world she lives in has been taken over by zombies basically… its about her survival, the people she meets, the near death experiences and about her family.

Ella is the main character in the story and to be honest at the very, very start I was a bit unsure on her. I thought she might be a little annoying like a lot of characters seem to be but No! Did Holly Sparks just create one of the coolest characters? Yes she did! Ella was so brave and quite a hero! I really enjoyed reading the novel from her point of view! She is also like the best fighter out there! (well, with the amount of time she had she is)

Troy….. heheheh Troy was amazing! He was… I loved him! My new bookish boyfriend 😉 I really looked forward to reading scenes with Troy because of the Chemistry and just his over all attitude its great!

Zoe was another character that really liked she was like a mini ninja! And I loved how close her and Ella become throughout the book!
~
I DO NOT LIKE SOMEONE OR A FEW SOMEONES BUT I WONT SAY ANYTHING CAUSE DONT WANT TO SPOIL THE SUPRISE!!!! But Holly Sparks did a great job at making me hate these character/s!

So, this novel is a defiantly a must read for the beginning of 2016 if you haven’t already read it! I can see it becoming a major craze very soon so why not join in on the greatness early!!
Holly has a great writing style that should be shared with the world!

blogmas 1 copyHere is Australia its 7pm on Christmas Eve and I know my little sister, (and myself) is very excited for Santa tonight! But make sure you don’t forget the real meaning of Christmas when you are opening up your gifts on Christmas Morning!

Today im going to do another tag that I saw on The girl who read’s too much blog! Love her blog too by the way, you should go check it out!

  1. Pick a book with a wintery cover:

For this question ill defiantly have to pick ‘Let it Snow’! Its cover is so pretty and so wintery and I love it !let-it-snow (2)

2. A book you are most likely to give as a gift:

This really depends on the person you are giving the gift to, but maybe a book from a super hyped series like Hunger Games, Divergent etc. Or another book that you think the person would like!

3. Pick a festive themed book :

I really enjoyed ‘ The Joy of Christmas’ which is a Christmas book… but I loved Let it snow, but I feel like I talk about that book too much so I will go with The joy of Christmas. christmas-tree-clip-art-xmas_christmas_tree_5-3333px.png4. Pick a book you could curl up by the fireplace with :

If I had a fireplace, I defiantly would just cuddle up with whatever book I was reading at the time! But if I had to chose I would choose….. Fangirl or a John Green book! 160689055. Pick a book I want to read over the festive period:

Well, because its Christmas Eve I guess the festive period is almost over but a book I would love to read next year would be Lost Christmas by David Logan! The cover is so pretty! 51s63uyEQXL._SY291_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_6. Pick a book that is so good it gave you the chills:

The Throne of glass series was and is still so good! The description in it is beautiful and it gave me the chills! You are awesome Sarah! Throne-of-glass-cover.jpg
